5 Local SEO Strategies Every Edinburgh Business Can Implement Today

On This Page

Ever Googled your business and thought, “Why the heck am I not showing up?”

You’re not alone.

I chat with local business owners in Edinburgh all the time who are baffled by why their competitors are showing up in the “map pack” or top of Google, and they’re not.

The thing is, you don’t need a big agency budget (check out this article by DesignRush to see how expensive SEO can be) or complex tools to start improving your local SEO.

You just need to take a few smart steps, consistently.

Let’s break down five local SEO strategies I’ve used to help businesses in Edinburgh climb the ranks, and bring more customers through the door.

1. Optimise Your Google Business Profile (GBP)

This one’s a no-brainer.

Google Business Profile (GBP) is the foundation of local SEO.

It’s what shows up when someone searches for your business name, or when they search for a product or service you offer in your area (like “coffee shop near Haymarket”).

But here’s what tons of businesses get wrong: they set it up once and forget about it.

Google loves active, up-to-date profiles.

Here’s what you should do:

  • Fill in every section: business description, categories, services, opening hours, even your holiday hours.
  • Upload high-quality images regularly: inside your shop, the team, and the products. If you’re a service business, show your work!
  • Post updates weekly: Think promos, behind-the-scenes, blog teasers. It’s like a mini social feed.
  • Respond to all reviews: not just the good ones. Be polite, stay calm, and show you’re listening.

2. Target Local Keywords On Your Website

Alright, this is one of the biggest game-changers when it comes to local SEO, and where most businesses in Edinburgh miss the mark.

It’s not enough to say “we’re a florist” or “we do plumbing.”

You need to tell Google who you are, what you do, and where you do it, as clearly as possible.

Let’s break it down into two parts:

  1. How to find the right local keywords
  2. How to build optimised service + location pages

Part 1: Use Semrush to Find Local Keyword Opportunities

If you’ve never used Semrush before, it’s a keyword research powerhouse, and honestly, one of the tools we use daily for our SEO Services.

Here’s how you can use it for local SEO:

Go to the Keyword Magic Tool.

Enter terms that match your business and the area that you serve, for example, “plumber Edinburgh” or “wedding photographer Scotland.”

Make sure you have the correct country selected and hit search. You’ll be greeted with a ton of data for search queries related to keyword you entered.

Now, there are a few different pieces of information that we want to look out for here.

Ideally, we want to look for long-tail keywords. These are more specific search terms like “emergency plumber Edinburgh Scotland”.

From here, check keyword difficulty.

If your site is relatively new or has low authority, stick with keywords under 50% KD, as these will be easier to rank for.

We also want to pay attention to the search volume.

You don’t need thousands of searches, a keyword with even 50–100 local searches per month can be gold if it brings in the right customers.

With all that in mind, we can see that the term “emergency plumber Edinburgh Scotland” receives over 300 searches per month, with a very low keyword difficulty of 9.

This is a great keyword to try and rank for.

The competition is low, the volume is good and the term can be used easily throughout your page.

Part 2: Create Specific Service + Location Pages

This is the part most businesses skip, and it’s one of the easiest ways to outrank your competitors in multiple locations.

Let’s say you’re an electrician based in Edinburgh, but you regularly work in Musselburgh, Dalkeith, and Livingston.

Instead of just having one generic “Services” page, you should create dedicated pages for each area, like:

  • yourbusinessname.com/electrician-edinburgh
  • yourbusinessname.com/electrician-musselburgh
  • yourbusinessname.com/electrician-dalkeith

And make sure each page is properly optimised and using the keywords you discovered in the previous step.

How do you do this?

  • Unique content: Don’t just copy/paste the same info with different town names. Write about the specific services offered in that area, any local knowledge, or customer examples.
  • Location-based headlines: Use keywords in H1 and H2 tags, like:
“Trusted Electrician in Musselburgh – Fast Callouts Available”
  • Local images, if possible: Show your van in the area, past work in local homes, etc.
  • Google Maps embed: This helps reinforce your presence in that area.
  • Internal links: Link back to your homepage, main services page, and any relevant blog posts using exact match anchor text.
  • Optimised Meta information: How you do this depends on what Content Management System you’re using. That said, if you’re using WordPress, then the Rank Math plugin would be our suggestion.
  • Keyword optimization: Be sure to use the keyword you’re targeting naturally throughout the page.

Hit all of the above bullet points, and your site will be primed and ready for highly targetting organic traffic.

3. Get Listed in Local Directories

Online directories might feel a bit 2008, but for local SEO, they still matter.

Each listing is like a little signal to Google saying, “Hey, this business exists here.”

Plus, many directories also give you a backlink, which helps boost your site’s authority.

High-value UK & Edinburgh directories:

Make sure your Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP) are the same on every listing. Even tiny differences (like “Rd” vs “Road”) can cause inconsistencies that confuse Google.

Pro tip: Use a tool like BrightLocal to manage your citations if you don’t want to do them all manually.

4. Encourage and Respond to Customer Reviews

Reviews are social proof, and one of the biggest trust factors for new customers.

They also play a direct role in how Google ranks your business in local results.

Businesses with more (and better) reviews tend to rank higher in the “map pack.”

How to get more reviews:

  • Just ask! After a positive job, send a quick email or WhatsApp:
“Thanks again for coming in! If you’ve got a sec, would you mind leaving us a Google review? It really helps small businesses like ours. [Insert link to your Google Business Profile]”
  • Use signage in-store: Add a QR code that links to your review page.
  • Follow up: A gentle reminder a few days later can double your review count.

Don’t forget to respond:

Replying to reviews (even bad ones) shows you care and gives you a chance to add relevant keywords. For example:

“Thanks for the kind words, Sarah! We’re so glad you loved your facial at our Newington salon. Hope to see you again soon!”

That’s useful for both humans and search engines.

5. Build Local Backlinks

Backlinks = authority.

In simple terms, a backlink is when another website links to yours.

Google sees this as a vote of confidence.

And when those links come from local sources? Even better.

Local link-building ideas:

  • Partner with other businesses: Do a blog swap or offer a discount in exchange for a shoutout.
  • Sponsor local events or teams: Many will list your business (with a link) on their website.
  • Get featured in roundups: Like “Top 10 vegan cafés in Edinburgh” or “Best dog groomers in the city.”
  • Pitch to local blogs or publications: The Edinburgh Reporter, Hidden Edinburgh, or local Facebook groups are great places to start.
  • Claim brand mentions: There’s a good chance your business has already been mentioned on other websites without a link back to your site. Using a tool like Ahrefs, you can identify these unlinked brand mentions, then reach out to the site owners and politely request that they add a link to your website.

Quick win: Look for broken links on local websites. If they’ve linked to an outdated or deleted page, offer your site as a replacement.

It’s cheeky, but it works.

Final Thoughts

That’s it.

Five actionable, no-fluff local SEO strategies you can use today.

And here’s the thing:

You don’t need to tackle everything at once.

Pick one, like updating your Google Business Profile, and build from there.

Ok, let’s recap quickly:

  1. Keep your Google profile updated
  2. Use local keywords on your website
  3. Get listed in trusted directories
  4. Ask for reviews (and respond!)
  5. Build links from local sources

Do that, and you’ll already be ahead of 80% of the competition.

And if you’re thinking, “This all sounds great, but I just don’t have time to do it properly…”
