Local SEO Tools: The Best Software to Skyrocket Your Local Rankings

On This Page

Trying to get found by customers in your area but stuck on page 2 of Google?

You’re not alone.

Local businesses everywhere are competing to show up in those precious map results and local searches.

The good news?

The right local SEO tools can give you a serious leg-up.

Whether you’re a a therapist in Newcastle, a café in Cardiff, or running a service-based biz here in Edinburgh (like us at Savvy Search), I’ve pulled together the tools that move the needle.

Let’s get to it.

What Are Local SEO Tools and Why Do They Matter?

Local SEO tools help your business show up in local search results.

Think “coffee shop near me” or “roofers in Dundee.”

They handle things like managing your listings, tracking your rankings, collecting reviews, and optimising your content.

When I first started in SEO, I tried to manage everything manually.

It worked for a while, but I spent hours chasing citations and checking maps.

The right tools made it easier to scale, grow client rankings, and save my sanity.

Google Business Profile Tools

Google Business Profile Manager

This is your control panel for how your business appears on Google Maps and local results.

From here, you can:

  • Update your hours, photos, and services
  • Post updates (like events or offers)
  • Respond to reviews
  • Manage bookings (if you’ve integrated a booking system)

While not a tool as such, a Google Business Profile is so essential to your local SEO success that it had to be mentioned.

👉 Tip: Posting once a week and regularly uploading fresh images signals to Google that your business is active and trustworthy.

Whitespark Google Review Link Generator

Ever struggled to get customers to leave a review because the link is too long or complicated?

Well, Whisepark’s Google Review Link Generator is an insanely useful tool to have.

This tool creates a direct link or QR code that takes users straight to the review box for your GBP listing. This is incredibly handy if you communicate with your customers through email or text.

To top it off, this feature is completely free!

Citation Building & NAP Consistency

BrightLocal

This is easily one of my most-used tools.

BrightLocal lets you:

  • Audit your current citations
  • Spot inconsistencies in your name, address, and phone number (NAP)
  • Build new citations in bulk across directories like Yelp, Scoot, Bing, Foursquare, etc.
  • Monitor your online presence over time
  • View your local rankings in a grid format based on your location.

Whitespark

Whitespark is another brilliant option for citation building, especially for niche industries.

They offer manual citation building and industry-specific packages; great if you’re in trades, law, or healthcare.

Yext

Yext is like the corporate version of citation management.

It pushes your NAP data to hundreds of directories instantly, but it comes with a higher monthly cost.

With that in mind, Yext is better suited to franchises or multi-location businesses.

Rank Tracking for Local Visibility

Local Falcon

Local Falcon is my favourite tool for visualizing local rankings.

Local Falcon shows you how your business ranks for a specific keyword at multiple map points around your city or service area.

BrightLocal Rank Tracker

BrightLocal is making a second appearance on this list, so hopefully, this demonstrates how robust this tool is.

The Rank Racker is a simple tool that lets you track local rankings over time, including:

  • Mobile vs desktop
  • Google Maps vs organic listings
  • Multiple locations and keywords

It integrates well with their reporting system, so it’s great if you’re doing client work, too (this is what we use).

Whitespark Local Rank Tracker

Whitespark’s Local Rank Tracker is another solid option.

It gives you deep data with historical charts and shows how your listings change in the map pack vs organic results.

It’s a bit more technical but extremely powerful.

All three are great options and offer free trials, so you can test them out and see which one you gel with the most.

Local Keyword Research Tools

Semrush

Semrush is a beast and offers a range of features that are perfect for local and broader SEO.

Here’s what I use it for in the realm of local SEO:

  • Finding local keyword opportunities
  • Tracking competitor rankings
  • Site audits and backlink profiles
  • Topic research for blog posts and service pages (geo-targeted)
  • Content gap with competitors
  • Backlink gap with competitors

It’s worth mentioning that Semrush does provide some local SEO features.

That said, their local SEO suite isn’t the focus of their offerings, and I tend to prefer other options for tracking map pack rankings and citation management.

I find tools that are specifically designed for local SEO to be more robust and offer better insights (Bright Local, for example).

Ahrefs

Ahrefs is very similar to Semrush but with a stronger focus on link building (I’ll discuss this more in our link-building section).

With that in mind, I tend to use SemRush for keyword research and Ahrefs for link building.

That said, not everyone wants to spend hundreds a month on multiple tools.

Both tools are incredibly powerful, so it comes down to personal preference.

AlsoAsked / AnswerThePublic

These tools generate actual questions people ask related to your keywords, which is perfect for creating blog content, FAQs, and featured snippets.

Here’s a top tip for you.

Writing blog content isn’t just about targeting keywords.

There’s another very valid reason to create content, and that’s called topical authority.

Topical authority can be summarised as informing Google that you’re a knowledgeable and reliable source within a specific niche.

Creating high-quality blog content is a fantastic way to do this…

So how do you find article topics that provide useful information?

Well, AnswerThePublic and AlsoAsked are two fantastic ways!

Local Link Building Tools

Buzzstream

Organising outreach can get messy.

Buzzstream helps:

  • Find email contacts
  • Track conversations
  • Manage link-building campaigns in one place

I used this when pitching local bloggers and business directories, as it keeps everything tidy and trackable.

HARO (Help a Reporter Out)

Want a backlink from Forbes or The Telegraph?

HARO sends you daily journalist requests. If your business fits the topic, pitch a quote, and you might get featured with a link.

Now, I’ll admit, this is nowhere near as reliable as it was a few years ago.

Still though, it’s free and a very easy way to get high-quality backlinks.

Ahrefs

Ahrefs is always my go-to tool for anything link building campaign. I could write thousands of words on Ahrefs alone, but I’ll keep this brief…

I love diving into competitor’ backlinks to gain an understanding of the tactics they’ve employed in their link building campaigns.

For example, let’s say I examine a competitor agency’s do follow referring domains.

I can see when the links were built, and by taking a look at the specific referring page, I can determine how the link was built.

An easy spot would be: “this article was written by James Davis from Savvy Search”. Straight away, I can see this is a guest post that they’ve written for another website.

Now, if the website was relevant, not spammy and authoritative, I could then reach out and offer to write a guest post myself.

Given that they’ve already linked to a competitor, there’s a good chance that I’d land a link myself.

Ahref’s link intersect tool is a great way to find these kinds of easy-win link opportunities.

Ahefs really is a goldmine for outreach ideas.

Local Content Optimisation Tools

Surfer SEO

This tool has been a total game-changer for on-page optimisation.

Surfer analyses the top-ranking pages for your target keyword and gives you:

  • Ideal word count
  • Keyword density
  • Recommended headers and structure
  • NLP terms and questions to include

If you’re not a big writer, you can even pair it with ChatGPT or Jasper to create SEO-rich content faster than ever.

That said, I would still spend a solid amount of time editing the content with your personal touch.

Our Tool Stack at Savvy Search (And Why We Use It)

Here’s what we use in-house for our local SEO clients:

  • BrightLocal – for audits, citations, and reviews
  • Local Falcon – to visualise map rankings
  • Surfer SEO – for killer service page optimisation
  • Semrush – for research, tracking, and competitive insights

These tools are easy to use, reliable, and deliver real results — exactly what you want when managing multiple campaigns.

What to Look for in a Local SEO Tool

Before you invest in any tool, ask yourself a few things…

Does it solve a problem you have?

Is it easy to use, or are you going to spend more time learning the tool than using it?

And does it give you location-specific data?

With local SEO, precision matters.

Ideally, your tool stack should simplify your life, not overcomplicate it.

Quick Win You Can Try Today

Head over to BrightLocal’s free citation scanner and run an audit of your business.

Spot any mismatched listings and fix them.

It’s an easy local SEO win that can have a big impact.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, now you’ve got a much clearer idea of what tools are worth your time, and why.

The truth is, no tool will magically rank you overnight.

But when used properly, tools like Surfer, BrightLocal, Local Falcon, and SemRush can give you an edge your competitors probably don’t have.

If you’d rather not go it alone or just want someone to take this off your plate, we offer local SEO services in Edinburgh and around the UK.
